Asphalt shingles have a lifespan that can last anywhere between 15 and 30 years. However, asphalt shingles require constant maintenance and routine repairs. While some homeowners may try to repair any damages they find, they may miss signs that could indicate that large sections of their roof may be beyond repair. Even worse, they could botch the repairs, causing even more damage. If a homeowner finds a roof leak or damaged shingles, it is recommended that they contact their trusted Raleigh roofing contractor for help.

If the contractor discovers damaged shingles during an inspection, they will recommend removing them. The roofing contractor will have proper safety equipment, which may include boots made especially for the job, work gloves and protective eyewear in addition to a roof harness. They will also properly secure a ladder for roof access. Once they are up on the roof, they'll walk the area to find and document the extent of the damage. If most of the roof is in need of repair, the contractor may suggest replacing all of the roof shingles.

Once the damage has been assessed, the contractor may use a pry bar to loosen the adhesive that keeps the shingles attached to the roof structure below. This will reveal the shingle nails. Next the contractor will carefully pull the nails out of the wooden structure. Eventually, the contractor will be able to completely loosen the asphalt adhesive and remove the shingles that have been damaged. Usually, the contractor will remove all shingles that are too damaged to be repaired before replacing any new shingles.

In some cases, shingles that have cracked or split can be repaired. While this is not always ideal, the contractor can use the shingle adhesive to line the crack. However, it should be noted that if the shingle has become brittle or begins to crumble during the repairs, it will need to be removed. When shingles crumble, this is usually an indication that the entire roof will need to be replaced.

Many homeowners like to attempt to make repairs to the roof themselves; however, if the homeowner has no experience or training with roof work, there is a potential that they could make the problem worse. If the roof needs to be completely replaced, a homeowner may miss the signs. If that happens, they could end up with water damage to the roof's wooden structure, which could be much more costly to fix.
